'I want to do something beyond films'
Actor Rekha says that she wants to use her experience for a more creative endeavour.
"She has agreed to meet you for five minutes. But on one condition, you can only shoot her." Surprised? read on... Well... "you can click her photos but no questions, please," said producer Bipin Vohra.
When we touched down at the Hyderabad airport, to meet the Umrao Jaan, who was shooting with Nana Patekar for Goutam Ghose's Yatra, we knew that getting Rekha's interview wouldn't be a cakewalk but we also didn't imagine that it would be a blink-and-miss experience like the camera flash - literally.

We waited for Rekha to wrap up her shoot, which started at 3 am. After that, the lady had to travel 35 km to reach her hotel room. But after all this trouble she met us before she took the flight to Mumbai. At the scheduled time the Rekha made her grand entry and she sat next to Nana Patekar.

Journos are not supposed to be star-struck but when you see Rekha you just can't help it. Baton, baton mein she said, "I know what kind of impact I have on people," yes, we couldn't agree more.
As the flash guns went aflutter, Rekha said in a warm voice, "I have exactly five minutes. You can ask me what you want." That's when Vohra said, "Heard you can speak Bengali well?" "Shotti bolcchhi ektu ektu jani.
I can say, 'Aamar matha dhorecche' or 'Aamar ghum pacche'," chirped the actor. With the gift of the gab she can philosophise on a different plane. "For me movies are the medium through which I connect with people.

From the producer to the spot boy I like to know all. I never talk about my roles because I want my work to do the talking." ...

Rekha, who plays Lajwanti, a tawaif living in Mehendi Gali in Hyderabad and eventually becomes bar dancer Liza, to keep pace with the times, said, "Nana and I always wanted to work together so when we got this opportunity there was no question of giving it up."
Rekha admits that there is more up her sleeves in the years to come. "I am not done with films yet. But I do want to use my experience and do something beyond films.
One thing is for sure I do not believe in dreaming and for me reality is more fascinating than fantasy. This world is perfect ."
Saying this the lady whizzed off. It took us some time for reality to sink in.
